PURI home of the Jagannath
Puri, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha (formerly Orissa until 2011), is a major pilgrimage town centered on the Jagannath Temple, dedicated
to Vishnu. The vast temple complex spans over 37,000 square metres (400,000 sq ft) and is enclosed by the 6.1‑metre‑high Meghanada Pacheri wall. Built in the Kalinga
architectural style, it contains more than 120 shrines and is considered one of India’s most magnificent sacred sites. Its main tower—the tallest in Odisha—rises
65 metres (214 ft) and is crowned with the Neelachakra, an eight‑spoked wheel of Vishnu. Just a short bus ride south of Bhubaneswar, Puri greets visitors with a swirl
of processions celebrating life, death, and devotion. On the beach, Hare Krishnas dance in bright clusters, families wade fully clothed into the surf, and elephants
carry delighted children across the sand.
