I spent a week at Jaisalmer Fort, an architectural marvel rising from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. Built in 1156 CE by the Rajput dynasty, it remains one of the
world’s few “living forts,” with about 4,000 residents—mostly Brahmin and Rajput families—still inhabiting its winding lanes. Perched 250 feet above the desert
and encircled by a 15‑foot wall forming the outer ring of its triple‑layered defenses, the fort once held the entire population of Jaisalmer within its walls.
Among its most captivating features are the seven Jain temples, carved from golden sandstone between the 12th and 16th centuries. Jainism, one of India’s three ancient religions,
is expressed here through serene images of the twenty‑four Tirthankaras, each seated in meditation. The faith centers on liberating the soul from the cycle of rebirth
by eliminating accumulated karma through knowledge, discipline, and mastery over the passions. When all karma is shed, one becomes a Jina—a “conqueror” who transcends
rebirth. Jain philosophy envisions a layered universe of heavenly and tormented realms, navigated through a life of non‑violence, truthfulness, fidelity, and detachment.
This ethical commitment shapes daily practice, including strict vegetarianism and a profound dedication to peaceful living.
